BED STYLES: Contemporary Beds, Modern Beds, Traditional Beds, Kids Beds

BED TYPES: Bunk Beds, Loft Bed, Platform Bed, Canopy Bed, Sleigh Bed,Low Profile Bed, Log Bed, Wing/Shelter Bed, Panel Bed, Captain's Bed, Wrap Bed, Slat Bed, Murphy Bed

Bed Styles

Contemporary:Often devoid of definitive style, the contemporary styled bed can be matched or paired with many different pieces, styles, and designs. Contemporary style is simple and straight forward.

Modern:Not to be confused with the contemporary style, the modern style is that which is popular at the moment, and thus what is modern is constantly changing. Currently, more modern styles often incorporate straight lines or angles. However, modern bed styles are simply the design of the times.

Traditional:A traditionally styled bed is a basic model bed with a frame to support a box spring and mattress. More traditional beds are typically found with rectangular, arched, wooden headboards and often accompanied by matching footboard. Traditional beds may include upholstery, four posters, or other bed features, but are often constructed of wood with simple to ornate carvings, decorations and otherwise classic styling.

Kids:Kid-styled beds are those most suitable for children, usually twin sized and with features such as under-bed storage, trundle beds, and youth-themed design.

Bed Types

Bunk Beds:Often used in children’s rooms, dormitories, or other quarters with limited space, bunk beds consist of two bed frames stacked upon each other with the top bed lofted. Traditionally, bunk beds accommodate two smaller twin-size beds, although the genre also accommodates larger full size beds with a smaller bed stacked above.

Loft Bed:The loft bed consists of a raised bed frame that allows for extra storage or space below it for items such as desks or other surfaces as well as for general storage. The loft bed is a good option for a smaller room with little space, and differs from bunk beds in that another bed is not attached or found below.

Platform Bed: A platform bed, a type of bed which is found with more frequency today, is a bed without springs, but with a hard base which consists of a raised flat surface to support a mattress. As is the style of contemporary beds, no box spring is required with the platform bed.

Canopy Bed:A canopy bed, which expands upon the four poster bed, includes four posts that support a fabric covering or cloth ceiling which encloses the bed from above. Canopy beds are usually much more decorative than conventional beds.

Sleigh Bed:A sleigh bed has scrolled or slightly scrolled headboard and footboard which roll outward at the top. These beds are often heavy, with solid wood construction. The sleigh bed resembles in some ways a horse-drawn sleigh, and is called and styled likewise for its protection from drafts.

Low Profile Bed:A low profile bed is a contemporary-styled bed constructed to save room and minimize visual size or appearance. Crafted as a solution to overwhelming or dominating large, traditional styled beds, this type of bed incorporates a slatted or platform frame to forego the need of a box spring and thus avoid added height. The low profile bed can be of elaborate design, but its goal is to reduce vertical size and sit very close to the floor.

Log Bed:A low bed is one with a headboard, footboard, and side rails constructed of genuine log or of a material whose appearance resembles cedar, pine, or other unfinished wooden logs. The term is often used to denote rustic, country, or cabin-styled bedroom furniture.

Wing/Shelter Bed:A wing or shelter bed is one whose headboard and/or footboard is extended and wraps around to partially enclose the head and foot of a mattress, with the sides often resembling wings. This type of bed is closely related to a wrap bed.

Panel Bed:The panel bed is an often traditionally-styled (usually wooden) bed whose headboard consists of multiple wooden squares or panels for a refined, antique look. In this category as well falls the window pane headboard, whose surface consists of a pattern of multiple inlayed or open squares.

Captain's Bed: A Captain’s bed, which is similar to a platform bed, consists of a shallow box or raised platform with one or more storage drawers in the side underneath and a mattress on top.

Wrap Bed: A bed with a footboard or frame whose corners wraps around and partially encloses the foot of the mattress. Also called wrap-around bed, the wrap bed is closely related to the wing or shelter bed.

Slat Bed: The frame of the slat bed has a series of metal or wooden slats that run parallel to the headboard and/or footboard, making it possible to support a mattress without a box spring. This design is often employed in bunk beds, loft beds, and more modern, low-profile beds.

Murphy Bed: Also known as a wall-bed or fold-away bed, the Murphy bed is constructed so that it can be flipped or swung up at the head end for vertical storage inside a closet or cabinet as a space-saver. In order to do this, the mattress is attached to the bed frame, lying on wire mesh rather than a box spring or other framing method. Most Murphy beds are also not equipped with headboards, footboards or bed rails. The Murphy bed is rarely found today but still sometimes seen in smaller apartments or mobile homes.

Headboard Types

Upholstered:Upholstered headboards give a warm feeling and may fall comfortably into many different styles, such as traditional or modern bedroom décor styles. The actual upholstery can be anything from leather or suede, to simple fabrics or cloths.

Bookcase Headboards: Bookcase headboards are configured to allow for optimum storage space. A bookcase headboard can replace or accent other bedroom furniture. For example, it may act as an alternative or complement to traditional nightstands.

Wood: Constructed of any type of wood, including solid hardwood, wooden beds and headboards are often finished with veneers for a more polished look and durable surface. Wooden beds and headboard give a warmer, more traditional and antique feel to the furniture.

Metal: Constructed of bronze, brass, silver, or other metallic surfaces, with open rail-type configuration, this type of headboard or frame gives an open, airy, contemporary feel to a bed.

Window Pane: A window pane headboard consists of a repeating pattern of squares, open, carved, or decorative, resembling a window pane, and is similar in that fashion to the panel bed.
